Confluence Data Center end of life: what small teams can do
Atlassian stopped selling new Confluence Data Center subscriptions on March 30, 2026, and ends Data Center on March 28, 2029, when it becomes read-only (Atlassian's notice). Server already ended in February 2024. If your team's wiki runs on either, you'll need to move it. Here are the realistic options for a team under 200 people.
Option 1: Move to Confluence Cloud
The path Atlassian wants you on. Content moves with Atlassian's own migration tools, and people keep the editor they know.
- Cost: per user. From October 13, 2026, Standard lists at $7.15 per user a month and Premium at $14.10 when billed monthly, with lower rates on annual plans and above 100 users. There's a free plan for up to 10 users.
- Good fit if: you also use Jira Cloud heavily, or rely on Marketplace apps.
- Watch for: Data Center apps with no Cloud version, and a bill that grows with every hire. Cloud prices have risen every October for the last two years.
Option 2: Move to another hosted tool
Notion, Slab, Outline, GitBook and others.
- Cost: usually per user, often $7 to $20 a month each. A few, such as Outline, charge flat prices in user bands.
- Good fit if: you want a different style of tool and are ready to restructure your docs.
- Watch for: imports from Confluence are partial in most tools. Page trees, macros and attachments often need manual cleanup.
Option 3: Self-host an open source wiki
BookStack, Wiki.js, DokuWiki and XWiki are mature, free and run on a small server.
- Cost: the server, from about $10 a month, plus someone's time for upgrades, backups and security patches.
- Good fit if: you have someone who enjoys running servers and has time for it.
- Watch for: the work doesn't stop after setup. Security updates need applying quickly.
Option 4: A hosted open source wiki at a flat price
Someone else runs the open source wiki for you. You keep the freedom to leave that open source gives you, without the upkeep.
- Cost: a flat monthly price, whatever your headcount. Several hosts offer BookStack, mostly in Europe. Tablewide is one of them: $49, $99 or $199 a month, unlimited users, US hosting with EU on request, and a free move from Confluence.
- Good fit if: you want a simple, fast wiki and a predictable bill.
- Watch for: BookStack is simpler than Confluence. It has no Marketplace apps, and some Confluence macros become plain content.
How to decide
| If you… | Consider |
|---|---|
| Live in Jira Cloud and use Marketplace apps | Confluence Cloud |
| Want to change how you write docs | Another hosted tool |
| Have spare admin time and like running servers | Self-hosting |
| Want a plain, fast wiki with a flat bill and no upkeep | A hosted open source wiki |
Whatever you choose, start with an export
An HTML export of each space is your backup, and it's what any migration starts from. Here's how to export a Confluence space.
Tablewide hosts BookStack and is not affiliated with Atlassian or the BookStack project.
